This is a women-only event, created for women who want more clarity, confidence, and community in the backcountry.

Hosted in partnership with Lone Pine Gear Exchange and Women on the Ascent, this panel brings together women who recreate, guide, forecast, and lead in the backcountry for an honest, experience-based conversation.

Backcountry skiing can feel intimidating, confusing, and full of unspoken rules. This panel is here to change that.

We’ll talk about what it really looks like to get started, how to make decisions in complex conditions, how to choose gear that fits your needs, and the mistakes, lessons, and close calls that shaped how these women move through the mountains today.

This is a women-centered space for curiosity, learning, and connection.
No slides. No ego. Just real conversation.

If you are new to the backcountry, early in your journey, or looking to feel more supported as you continue to grow, this panel is for you.

Panelists

Piper Kunst
Piper is a professional freeride skier and film producer based in Salt Lake City. After earning the title “Queen of Corbet’s” in 2022, she began intentionally expanding her career deeper into the backcountry through mentorship, experience, and community. Piper believes strongly in creating mountain spaces where women feel confident, supported, and empowered, and where even small wins matter.

Jessie Haffener
Nomadic by nature, Jessie has guided backcountry ski and backpacking clients for nearly a decade across the West. She works winters in the Wasatch and Uintas and summers in the High Sierras and Southcentral Alaska. Deeply influenced by female mentorship early in her career, Jessie is now in her sixth winter leading women’s backcountry ski and mentorship programs and believes strongly in women-led mountain spaces.

Nikki Champion
Nikki is an avalanche forecaster with the Utah Avalanche Center and has spent seven seasons forecasting for the Salt Lake, Provo, and Ogden area mountains. She also guides alpine routes and works in wildland fire, bringing a year-round perspective to risk, leadership, and decision-making. Nikki is deeply committed to mentorship, education, and supporting women in the backcountry.
